If you live in Chandler, Arizona and your windows tend to get quite hot, we have the solution for you. Arizona in general, is known for having quite a bit of sun. Chandler, specifically, takes on the Sonoran Desert in a way that you wouldn’t believe. Quite frankly, it’s amazing the best desert dwellers can live as long as we do in this sweltering heat. It’s this heat, that makes our homes use so much air conditioning.
You have a few options. One is to continue paying your electric company insane amounts of money for your air conditioning bill. This doesn’t seem very reasonable when you consider the ongoing toll it takes on your wallet.
Another option is sunscreens. Sunscreens can be quite nice, although they are a tad expensive. This expense is offset by energy savings over their lifetime. There are some downsides, though. Sunscreens have a tendency to fly away monsoon storms, rot after a few years, absorb a bunch of heat that can radiate into your home, and obscure your view. This obstruction can be quite noticeable in rainstorm were you won’t be able to see outside your windows all. Sunscreens also tend to be called solar screens. They’re called this because they block the sun. This is in contrast to normal screens which are called bug screens, which of course block bugs when your windows open. The screen effect means that the screen only allows things to pass through the holes. In the case of a bug screen the holder large enough that bugs typically can’t get through. In the case of the sunscreen this means that a heavy fabric is used, which will be used for blocking the light. The size of the whole determines how ” heavy” the screen is. A typical Chandler sunscreen will be rated at 80% to 90%. This means the sunscreen is blocking 80% to 90% of the sun’s rays wherever it’s heading the fabric. That means that over the course of the entire screen only 20 to 10% is penetrable by light. This results in what’s called “the cave effect”. Many of our residential customers are not large fans of the sunscreen cave effect. This is because the screen tends to darken room in a very large way. Also, that means that whatever is making it through the holes of the screen is allowed to come into the home at 100%. For example: all UV rays and infrared rays that don’t happen to hit fabric will come into your home.
Window tinting works differently. This option we feel is the best option. Sometimes it’s tempting for us to carry sunscreens and sell them to homeowners because it’s asked for in many cases. We believe that the awareness of sunscreens is so high because many people see their neighbors have them. And therein lies the predicament. When somebody sees the neighbor has sunscreens it creates an awareness that undetectable window tint just doesn’t have.
Window films can provide the same 80 to 90% protection that solar screens do, but it does in a very undetectable way. Window film operates on the principle of selecting which spectrums are allowed into the home. This means that 50% of the light, which is undesirable, can be rejected when he hits the window. By this I mean that infrared which is not visible by the human eye and UV which is damaging to the skin, your belongings, and a large factor in fading can all be sent back to where they came from by installing window film. Beyond that, visible light (Roy G. Biv) can also be tempered by window tinting. Window tinting has the ability to reflect out visible light. When this is done dramatically it can make the window look like a mirror. When it is done properly, it tends to make the window look shiny but not mirrory. Since window tinting looks this way, many people never know that their neighbors are even using it.
HOA’s usually will never even notice window tinting because of the reasons stated above, but if they did Arizona’s law is on your side. We always recommend checking with your HOA before installing window tint, but they really can’t stop you. Read more here.
